Holdovers hope to prosper at New Year's B.O.
'Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol' is expected to stay on top of the domestic box office.Warner Bros.' 'Sherlock Holmes' should take the No. 2 spot over the New Year's weekend.New Year's box office is historically light on new entries, leaving Christmastime holdovers with room to grow during what can be a solid moviegoing weekend. That's certainly the case this year, as Paramount's "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol," which won bragging rights last weekend with a four-day gross of $44.1 million, is expected to stay on top. Warner Bros.' "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" should follow after collecting $31 million over Christmas. Entering its second week of wide release, "Mission" has raked in $86 million domestically; "Sherlock" just passed $100 million in its third week. Only a quartet of titles open in limited release, led by the Weinstein Co.'s Friday entry "The Iron Lady" and Focus Features' "Pariah," which bowed Wednesday. (Both pics open at four locations.) Sony Pictures Classics' "A Separation," Iran's submission to the foreign-lingo Oscar race, and Magnolia's family drama "Angels Crest" also launch limited on Friday. Similar to Stateside plexes, overseas cinemas should benefit from filmgoers on vacation. In fact, business throughout Europe should increase significantly vs. last weekend since most theaters there were closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. "Mission" topped the overseas charts last weekend with $45.8 million; international cume is $144.2 million. "Sherlock" and Fox's "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" followed, collecting $22 million and $16.5 million, respectively, over the weekend. "Sherlock" has cumed $49 million; "Chipwrecked," $38.5 million. In 2010, Universal's holdover "Little Fockers" won New Year's weekend with $25.8 million. But that pic dropped 16% in its second weekend, while Par's No. 2-ranking "True Grit," also in its soph sesh, fell just 2% for a weekend take of $24.4 million. This year's crop should see similarly strong holds because of mostly positive exit polls and word of mouth. Beside "Mission" and "Sherlock," high-ranking pics should include Fox's "Chipwrecked," Sony's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and Disney-DreamWorks' "War Horse." The latter film, which bowed wide Christmas Day, will have more time to prove itself throughout the weekend, while "Dragon Tattoo" has been performing well in midweeks. "Chipwrecked" cumed north of $63 million, "Dragon Tattoo" $32.5 million and "War Horse" $18.7 million as of Dec. 27. Two family pics, Fox's "We Bought a Zoo" and Par's "The Adventures of Tintin," also hope to benefit from the lack of new wide releases. "Zoo" has collected $27.7 million domestically; "Tintin," $18.9 million. Contact Andrew Stewart at andrew.stewart@variety.com

Carrie Fisher, Carson Kressley to Star in Modern-Day 'Christmas Carol' for Hallmark Channel (Exclusive)
NY - CBS Corp. is seeing continued advertising momentum, expects digital distribution deals to provide a continuing revenue stream and wants a healthy Netflix, which has paid up for library content deals with the company, president and CEO Leslie Moonves said here Tuesday in kicking off the second day of the 39th annual UBS Global Media and Communications Conference on a typically bullish note.our editor recommendsCBS' Leslie Moonves on Charlie Sheen Debacle: 'S--- Happens'CBS News Retires 'Early Show' Title He also said his company wants to remain in business with the NFL, even though he didn't confirm that a new long-term NFL TV deal was close to being signed. Asked about the advertising market late in the year, Moonves said scatter ad market sales remain up in the mid-teens percentage range at CBS, even though competitors with weaker ratings are not doing as well. With the year-end approaching, "demand is picking up again," he said, and trends in the first quarter are looking "promising" with few cancellations. Summarized Moonves: "We're feeling good about advertising" - both nationally and locally. Moonves on Tuesday also once again lauded the "extremely solid" programming schedule at CBS and suggested that the broadcast business is" taking share away from cable," he said. Asked about concerns that broadcast TV may face some fallout from the availability of more content in new forms, Moonves said there was no sign that cable, the Internet or anything else has hurt ratings or financials. Asked about Netflix and its recent subscriber issues, Moonves said: "We want a healthy Netflix...We're rooting for them. We hope they continue to remain strong" and gain subs. The company has become "much more of a friend than a foe," he said. And Moonves said international growth by Netflix makes CBS "very excited" about potential upside in the likes of the U.K. and Canada. Asked about recent online content deals more broadly, which some analysts have predicted will slow down, Moonves said "the future looks extremely bright for this revenue stream to continue forever." And overall deals this year have turned out better than expected. He reiterated that hundreds of millions of dollars in deals for library content are flowing to CBS Corp. "Exclusivity we have avoided," because it is a "dirty word," he quipped. After all, the company wants to be open to whoever else gets into the digital distribution space, including Apple and Google. Other companies are "kicking the tires" for additional digital distribution deals, he said. "You have not heard the last of these deals." Moonves also reiterated on Tuesday that "primary engines" for his company are the CBS network and Showtime, which he called the "family jewels." With retransmission fees rising and syndication strong, "why would you mess with that," Moonves said. Speaking of Showtime, Moonves told the UBS conference that Homeland is "the best show on television." He added: "It's a great hit." He later told The Hollywood Reporter that he is, of course, proud of all the hit shows on his networks. Moonves told the UBS conference that Showtime continues to look for more original content, including upcoming Don Cheadle comedy House of Lies, which he accidentally called House of Cards, the name of Netflix's first push into original programming, before correcting himself right away. The CBS boss also got a question about the future of football content on the network. The NFL is reportedly close to signing an eight-year extension of TV rights deals to 2021 with broadcast partners CBS, Fox and NBC that would earn it about $3.2 billion a year, a 60 percent increase over the current contract. "I assume we'll continue to be in business with the NFL," Moonves told the UBS conference. It is "an unbelievable property" as even a bad football game outrates most programming, he said, adding that CBS is making a lot of money from the CBS. While retransmission consent fees will continue to rise from current levels, sports deals will take up "some of that money," Moonves said, but described this as "nothing to worry about." Nomura analyst Michael Nathanson said early Tuesday that 2014 could mean some headwinds from a new NFL deal for CBS. The cost for the NFL should go up since it has done "extremely well," but Moonves emphasized that the league "likes their partners to be strong" and make money. "We hope it continues for many years." Asked about his broader plans for sports coverage, Moonves said: "We really love the mix of sports programming we have...I'm not looking to expand...We're as solid as we have ever been." He pointed to the company's NFL, SEC, NCAA and golf events coverage. Moonves said CBS has no major revenue from reverse retrans deals with TV station groups yet, with 2013 starting to see financials from that revenue stream becoming more significant. His firm looks at each station group separately though, and there isn't a finite solution, he emphasized. Some struggle, so "we're not going to go after them as much," Moonves said, describing overall network-stations relationships at CBS as good. Asked about the use of cash at CBS Corp., Moonves said it could well raise its dividend next year. And while it plans no major acquisitions right now, the company will keep its eyes open for possible deals if they make financial and strategic sense, he said. Moonves started the second day of the UBS conference. Monday night, UBS had organized a cocktail reception at a bar near the conference location, the Grand Hyatt hotel in midtown Manhattan. Among those schmoozing at the reception were Aryeh Bourkoff, vice chairman, head of investment banking, Americas at UBS, Madonna manager Guy Oseary, ICM's Patti Kim, Showtime boss Matt Blank, TiVo CEO Tom Rogers, Dish Network board member Carl Vogel, Time Warner CFO John Martin, Anschutz executive Daniel Benel, Electronic Arts CFO Eric Brown, Katherine Keating, the daughter of the former prime minister of Australia, and former Sundance Channel CEO Larry Aidem. Hell on Wheels: TV Review
For Hell on Wheels, AMC's ambitious Western, there are many trouble to handle immediately -- present, past and future.our editor recommendsAMC Revs Up 'Hell on Wheels' With Full Season OrderAMCs 'Hell on Wheels' Leads TV's Wild For Western TrendFirst Have a look at AMC's New Drama 'Hell on Wheels' (Video) Within our, the pilot isn't excellent. It's flat, has flashes of action, then finishes getting a thud. Which, consequently, boosts yesteryear. If you're can make a Western, you'll probably be compared to Deadwood, the Cinemax jewel, no matter what you ought to do. What Hell on Wheels doesn't need, at this time around, are critiques to such greatness. It's certainly not Deadwood. Period. Along with the series to avoid worrying in regards to the troubles for future years -- each time a staggering increase of Westerns are coming around the bend -- it has to establish itself inside a hurry and be an engaging drama in the crowded area. STORY: AMC's 'Hell on Wheels' Leads TV's Wild for Western Trend Getting seen the initial four episodes, achieving that goal could be problematic. You will discover elements to Hell on Wheels that are compelling. There's potential by the bucket load -- as there has to be when you're undertaking a genre series due to a lot of legendary elements to choose from. There's however a nagging suspicion that Hell on Wheels, created by Tony and Joe Gayton, does less than understand exactly what it really wants to be, that might explain why after four several hours it seems like an amount of ideas that haven't quite gelled. The series is positioned publish-Civil War and concentrates on the structure in the transcontinental railroad. In the beginning the producers started callingHell on Wheels an "Eastern" as opposed to a Western, because it focuses on moving East to West (hence, no Chinese employees -- just an amount of former slaves, ex-soldiers and Irish immigrants). No matter what they're calling it, a lot of the pilot seems enjoy it desires to be part Clint Eastwood Western (just choose one) and, well, Deadwood. Enjoy it gives audiences an enormous dose of Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount), a classic Digital digital rebel soldier hell-bent on revenge for your murder of his wife. Bohannon's got the squinty eyes, the beard, the hat as well as the sidearm that signifies "troubled loner ready to kill you." Nevertheless the series then changes to Thomas Durant (Colm Meaney), the greedy public face of Union Off-shoreline Railroad, who at the same time desires to break the bank from government subsidies and land grants or loans or financial loans for your railroad and, less readily, to complete the imagine coast-to-coast travel. VIDEO: Start Searching at AMC's New Drama 'Hell on Wheels' The Two meet up inside the moving tent city known to as Hell on Wheels, a type of base camping for your railroad employees since it inches westward. Hell on Wheels, the town, seems just like a less recognized version of Deadwood, the town in, well, Deadwood. You will find the grime as well as the whores as well as the consuming, while not the layered nuance of figures. That's partly because Hell on Wheels has trouble, as stated above, identifying exactly what it desires to be. For example, we learn, as Bohannon seeks employment round the railroad, he will be a former slave owner who married a lady within the North, gave his slaves independence yearly just before the Emancipation Proclamation, and -- what? Wants revenge? Once he starts to be, by picking in the males involved, the Bohannon character starts to empty out. You would like to explore him, but he just seems one-dimensionally dedicated to revenge. Almost every other time we meet him, there is not enough with the idea to love him or dislike him, so he becomes a caricature of Clint. The pilot also introduces Elam (Common), an ex-slave none too very happy to be taking orders from Bohannon while being a free of charge guy round the railroad. Elam as well as the relaxation in the former slaves are evidence the Gaytons desire to tackle the race problem. We meet Lilly Bell (Dominique McElligott), really the only lady who's not just a prostitute. So possibly there's an position to tackle in regards to the struggles of girls, too. We meet lots of Indians, even though producers have mentioned they're not going to really tackle that aspect until Season 2. Meanwhile, there's Ernest Black Moon (Eddie Warrior warrior spears) who converts to Christianity beneath the guidance of Reverend Cole (the wonderful Tom Noonan). So you've got the Indian position kind of addressed, plus religion. Sean and Mickey McGinnes (Ben Esler and Phil Burke) will be the youthful Irish hustlers inside the camping, check in the immigrant box, too. STORY: E1, Endemol to produce 'Wheels' Pilot But not one of them of individuals figures really involves existence, even through four episodes. They exist, they hint within an capacity to become created into something, nonetheless they don't stick with you. Like Hell on Wheels desires to be lots of parts (or, if you want to become cynical relating to this, checked off boxes) there's however no whole. Really, the most effective character appears inside the second episode however is not stated inside the voluminous press materials or episode synopsis (!). It's Christopher Heyerdahl, playing a personality named The Swede. How one factor in one hour -- Episode 2 -- the Swede seems fully produced as well as the lead, Bohannon, seems being an deliberately murky combination of positive and negative that's more theoretical than apparent? Clearly, to acquire far enough to concern yourself with this problem, audiences will need to sort out the pilot. The bottom line is, it really doesn't pop. And becoming Meaney's railroad boss deliver some absurdly colorful exposition to nobody particularly (telling us, not showing us, just what the series ought to be about) boosts real concerns. Possibly a couple of from the issues here might be monitored that Joe and Tony Gayton recognized to TV experts within this summer time they pitched AMC around the different project (which AMC didn't get, in line with the brothers and sisters) and were later spoken into the idea of a Western because that's what AMC was trying to find in order to link the funnel to the Broken Trail roots. That doesn't exactly scream passion project, does it? Plus it stands in stark contrast to David Milch's all-in approach to beginning Deadwood. There's however still expect Hell on Wheels if audiences decide to have persistence (not just a given for nearly any show). Sun and rain from the good series are here. You will discover tales to see. But something must occur inside a genuine hurry (like, say, Episode 5?), to keep the idea. Possibly there's a hooking up agent that may get this to series greater than the sum its parts. Otherwise, it won't be extended before more Westerns show on the tv horizon -- and one of these simple is for certain to know it correctly. Email: Tim.Goodman@THR.com AMC Hell on Wheels Common

Its Official: Starz Orders David Goyer/BBC Worldwides Da Vincis Demons To Series
David Goyers Da Vincis Demons Eyes Green Light At Starz EXCLUSIVE: Starz has given a straight-to-series order to Da Vincis Demons, an adventure series fromThe Dark Knight/Man Of Steel co-writer David S. Goyer and BBC Worldwide Prods. Da Vinci’s Demons has received an eight-episode order and is slated to start filming in early 2012 for a 2013 premiere. This is the first project to enter production under the multi-year agreement Starz signed with BBC Worldwide Prods. in August. As a free thinker, with intellect and talents that are almost superhuman, he struggles to live within the confines of his own reality and time. He begins to not only see the future, but invent it. “Da Vinci was the original Renaissance man — a near-mythic figure that has world-wide appeal,” Goyer said. “This will be a show about secret histories, genius, madness, and all things profane. Milla Jovovich Blasts Studio Over Lack of 'Three Musketeers' Publicity [UPDATE]
UPDATE: Summit Entertainment responded to Milla Jovovich's complaints via Deadline. "She doesn't know what she's talking about and we don't know where she's coming from. [...] Wouldn't you think she would call us first about this? It's frustrating. It's not the right way to behave. If she has a problem then come to the studio and talk about it." EARLIER: Milla Jovovich took to Twitter this morning to slam Summit Entertainment over its lack of promotion for her new film 'The Three Musketeers.' "Are 'Summit' promoting it as a family adventure movie? Or are they resting on their laurels from 'Twilight' [and] making no effort? Let me know!" the actress tweeted Friday, the day 'Musketeers' opened nationwide. She accused the studio of sweeping the film under the rug in the U.S. and added, "Shame on them. SHAME ON YOU SUMMIT." Jovovich plays the villainous Milady de Winter, who -- in this revamp of the classic adventure tale -- wields a sword along with the Musketeers. The film was helmed by her husband, Paul W.S. Anderson, who also directed her in three 'Resident Evil' films. Summit's hottest property is, of course, the 'Twilight' franchise, which hardly needs more promotion at this point. The studio picked up 'Musketeers' for U.S. distribution but was not involved in production, as they have been with the 'Twilight' films and 'The Hurt Locker.' Jovovich was apparently en route to Japan, where 'The Three Musketeers' will open up the Tokyo International Film Festival. "Do you think ppl know about the movie?" she tweeted. Guess they do now, Milla. [via THR] [Photo: Summit] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook RELATED

The Big Year
Owen Wilson, Jack Black and Steve Martin set out to break bird-watching records in The Big Year.
A 20th Century Fox release of a Fox 2000 Pictures presentation of a Red Hour Films/Deuce Three/Sunswept Entertainment production. Produced by Karen Rosenfelt, Stuart Cornfeld, Curtis Hanson. Executive producers, Carol Fenelon, Ben Stiller, Jeremy Kramer. Co-producer, Brad Van Arragon. Directed by David Frankel. Screenplay, Howard Franklin, inspired by the book by Mark Obmascik.Stu Preissler - Steve Martin
Brad Harris - Jack Black
Kenny Bostick - Owen Wilson
Raymond - Brian Dennehy
Annie Auklet - Anjelica Huston
Ellie - Rashida Jones
Jessica - Rosamund Pike
Brenda - Dianne Wiest
Edith - JoBeth WilliamsSeeking to capture the fan/collectors/enthusiast gene, "The Big Year" uses Mark Obmascik's book about obsessed "birders" and transforms it into a genial if slow-moving, almost sleepy comedy. Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson play the central trio -- each at different stages of lives they put on hold to pursue their shared passion -- in a contest to eclipse what amounts to the Babe Ruth home run record of bird watching. Director David Frankel's pic delivers sweet and (more rarely) amusing moments, but this odd duck never completely gets off the ground, and box office ought to mirror that flight path. Loosely inspired by Obmascik's chronicle of three men vying to top each other during "the Big Year" competition in 1998, Frankel ("The Devil Wears Prada" and "Marley & Me," reunited here with Wilson) and screenwriter Howard Franklin loosely start with that template as a foundation to explore what's really important -- the ways people and their loved ones accommodate activities that become all-consuming.
"You can't compare golf to this. Golf is like a hobby," explains Wilson's Kenny Bostick to his frustrated wife (Rosamund Pike), later trying to rationalize missed events and blown deadlines by saying, "This is what I'm great at." Indeed, Bostick holds the birder record, having sighted 732 North American birds in a single "big year," which beckons to his two principal competitors: Stu Preissler (Martin), a rich businessman whose wife (JoBeth Williams) is more resigned to his yearlong flight of fancy than are his harried subordinates, who keep pleading with him to put out fires at work; and Brad Harris (Black), a divorced 36-year-old computer programmer who gets a mixed reaction to his obsession from his adoring, supportive mom (Dianne Wiest) and gruff dad (Brian Dennehy). Given Kenny's ruthlessly competitive nature, Stu and Brad (who doubles as the narrator) strike up an unlikely friendship. Mostly, though, the protagonists' paths intersect fitfully as they crisscross the continent responding to weather and seasonal patterns that will theoretically help them pad their totals. Beyond the leads, Frankel and company have aided their cause immeasurably by casting the movie to the hilt, with accomplished actors like Rashida Jones, Tim Blake Nelson, Anjelica Huston and Jim Parsons in what amount to minimal "there are worse ways to spend your TV hiatus" roles. Pic also makes appropriate use of various avian-related songs, including "Surfin' Bird" as Brad's ringtone. That said, the story unfolds slowly, and the running tally of bird sightings and calendar dates popping up onscreen only provide a frequent reminder of the laborious march until Dec. 31, when the competition ends. Nor does "Big Year" completely work as a travelogue, despite destinations that range from a remote Alaskan island to the Everglades. Like the central characters, the narrative can't see the forest, as it were, for the birds. For all that, there are some welcome aspects to the production, including a lack of big slapstick elements. Yet by eschewing broad, easy laughs, Frankel only reinforces a sense of this being less a bigscreen comedy than an inordinately well-cast Hallmark movie. Admittedly, there ought to be room for this sort of unassuming exercise movie in the theatrical space, but given the shifting winds, a project like that has to be almost pitch-perfect to stick the landing. As is, "The Big Year" is pleasant enough, but finally suffers -- pardon the analogy -- from being neither fish nor fowl.Camera (Deluxe color, Panavision widescreen), Lawrence Sher; editor, Mark Livolsi; music, Theodore Shapiro; music supervisor, Julia Michels; production designer, Brent Thomas; art directors, Michael Diner, Martina Javorova; set decorator, Peter Lando; costume designer, Monique Prudhomme; sound (Dolby/SDDS), David Husby; supervising sound editor, Paul Urmson; visual effects supervisor, Eric J. Tom Six on The Human Centipede II and What's In Store for His American-Set Trilogy Ender
Dutch filmmaker Tom Six cut a striking figure last month at Fantastic Fest, where he appeared — ever-smiling and clad head to toe in a pristine white suit, his outfit of choice — to world premiere his squirm-inducing body horror sequel, The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence). The following day Movieline spoke with Six about the film, in which he meets the challenge of one-upping himself in the escalation of extremes in gory, grotesque detail. Upon hearing that an audience member fainted the previous night, Six professed his sympathy. He was sorry to hear it, he said with a grin. Well, maybe not completely sorry. In person, the ebullient Six is rather cheerful for a guy who spends all his time dreaming up new ways to up the ante in a genre that’s already seen the heights of “torture porn” come and go. He’s already set to complete his Human Centipede trilogy, in which unfortunates so far in two countries and two films have discovered the hard way what happens when sick individuals decide to play god by stitching people together, end to end. His next and final Human Centipede target is America, which should be interesting; Six says he loves the United States — but he also counts Borat and the works of Lars von Trier among his favorite influencers. Read on and get to know Six, his artistic intentions with the Human Centipede trilogy, where he draws the line of good taste, why he doesn’t seem to mind distributor edits to his director’s cut of The Human Centipede II, and more. (Some spoilers follow.) So, your movie world premiered last night. Yes. I presume by now you’ve heard what the audience reaction was like? I was there, and I got the first reactions from the audience. They were all numb, coming out. Like, ‘Oh my God.’ Are you aware that a woman fainted towards the end of the film? Yeah! I heard. I was sitting next to her. That’s incredible, huh? I missed your Q&A because I was calling an ambulance for her. Oh no! I heard from people that two more people were [incapacitated]. But people have had violent, physical reactions to your work before. How much do you expect this kind of extreme reaction — and does it please you to hear when people do have them? Secretly it pleases me — of course, as long as people don’t get really hurt. But when I was making this film, when you make a film and write it and edit it, you are so busy with the material you forget how nasty it is. So for me, when people have reactions to what they see it’s very hard for me to think, ‘Oh, it is really gruesome.’ Because I’ve seen it so many times. You’re desensitized to it, then. I am. I am, definitely. The woman who fainted next to me said that the best part about her ordeal was that it reminded her she was human. Wow. That’s powerful stuff! Nonetheless, the things you put onscreen are so extreme, so viscerally stomach-churning… Yes, but I think that’s the core of filmmaking. If you make a great comedy and you’re laughing your ass of and you’re really hurt from the laughing — I love that. If a film in any way does that with you, that you’re really fucked up or you have a strong emotion, then it works I think. Because it’s terrible if you see a film and you don’t care. True. But do you think there’s such a thing as going too far? No, not in my world. I hate animal cruelty so I would never do anything with that in any of my films, but in my opinion it’s film, it’s make-believe, it’s art. It’s actors coming in, and we have lots of fun on the set. How can it go too far, then? Out of curiosity, what was your approximate bodily fluid budget on this movie? Oh, they brought in so much of the stuff. My sister Ilona [Six] does all the budgets so I don’t really care about them. The set must have been… Oh, it was a mess. And for the actors to lie in all the stuff, it was horrendous for them! They went home covered in all sorts of things. I don’t know how to describe this, exactly, but the moment when everyone in the centipede begins… let’s just say, the projectile scene. Yeah! That was a cool effect, eh? They put this little machine, like a blowing machine, between the legs of the actors and it [makes exploding sound] splatters on the wall. It’s all fun, and the actors think the same thing. Everybody was laughing all the time. The Human Centipede II follows the first film by building on it in an overtly self-referential way. Was this always the approach you knew you’d take back when you first conceived of the first film and possible sequels? Oh yeah, definitely. I had so many ideas when I was writing Part One and I couldn’t put them all in Part One, of course, so I wanted the audience to get used to this crazy idea first. That’s why it’s all psychological. And I knew the sequel had to have everything there. The blood, shit, gore — everything. So that’s why I tell the audience that part one is My Little Pony compared to part two. And that’s pretty accurate. I have to say, I didn’t believe a lot of those quotes you gave before I saw the film. I thought you were just hyping it up, but the sequel really is that much more extreme. So how can you possibly go any further in a third Human Centipede? I can because every film is different. Part One is so very different from Part Two, and I’m sure people find the psychological horror maybe more disturbing than seeing it on the screen. So with Part Three I go in a totally different direction again, and there are some scenes that I think are worse than Part Two — but in a whole different way! So it’s up to the viewer if it’s worse or whatever. [SPOILERS] Which scene do you actually consider the worst, hardest to watch moment in The Human Centipede II? For me, the rape scene. Then you get really uncomfortable. [END SPOILERS] That’s actually the last scene the woman who was sitting next to me remembered. And the scene goes on for quite a long time, which is part of the reason why it’s so unsettling — there’s nothing else on screen. There’s no escaping it. There’s nothing else. I knew it’d be so powerful because on set, people were crying. My script girl… real tears. They couldn’t handle it. The sound guy had to leave because it was too intense. But the actors who played it, they loved to play it. That’s the contradiction; they were really happy to play that scene, but they made other people cry. And I was jumping with joy, of course, because I knew— That it worked. Yes! It was working. On the subject of your director’s cut being edited for certain audiences, it seemed ridiculous for the U.K. to ban the film outright. [An 18-certification was granted this week.] But in America your distributor, IFC, is also editing down the film to remove the most difficult parts. Yes. How are you not bothered by that? Of course I want the audience to see my film. As a filmmaker, you make a film in the way you want to show it to the audience, but there are of course political things going on with cinemas, and other people are involved. Some things are maybe not legal or whatever, I don’t know about that. But I want my film to get out there, in any way it can. And they’ll do a director’s cut on DVD. So the trade-off is okay with you. Yeah, sure. Definitely. And people have the choice; there’s a version with some extreme things taken out, and I think it’s only a few minutes they had to take out. People can see almost all of it. But maybe it’s a good thing that some people are missing [said scenes]. Have you encountered any fans of The Human Centipede as obsessed with it or you as much as your Human Centipede II villain, Martin? Oh, you meet very colorful persons. I once had a lady sew three Barbie dolls together and she gave it to me — and she gave it to me without smiling. Very serious. Then you think, ‘Hmmm…’

Sony Might No Longer Have Right To Distribute Meat Loaf Albums (Exclusive)
Rick Nederstigt/AFP/Getty Images Meat Loaf's "Bat Out Of Hell" was released in 1977 and has sold approximately 43 million copies, making it the fifth best selling album of all time. The album continues to sell well, but Sony Music's control over this album as well as other hit albums is now under threat thanks to a lawsuit filed on Wednesday by the estate of a recently deceased record executive, Stephen Popovich, who was quite successful in his time. Sony is alleged to have engaged in massive accounting failures and ignoring the warnings of past lawsuits. As a result, Sony has purportedly forfeited rights to the album. PHOTOS: The Top 10 Highest Paid Music Artists Popovich was an American record executive who was particularly active in the 1970s as former vice president of Columbia Records and CBS. He is credited as signing acts such as Michael Jackson, Boston, The Charlie Daniels Band, and REO Speedwagon. In 1977, he founded Cleveland International Records, whose biggest success was signing Meat Loaf. A two-time Grammy Award winner, Popovich passed away on June 8. Now comes a lawsuit in Ohio federal court from Popovich's estate which claims that Sony has violated the terms of agreements with Cleveland International Records. The estate alleges that Sony has had a long history of underpaying royalties. As a result, Popovich and Sony have been in court on and off for the past fifteen years. The first lawsuit was filed in 1998 and then dismissed after the parties came to a settlement which purportedly required the record label to pay tens of millions of past due royalties. properly account for future royalties, and add the Cleveland International Records logo to all master recordings sold to the public. VIDEOS: MTV: 30 Years of Music Videos Sony allegedly didn't comply with the last provision of the agreement so Popovich filed a second lawsuit in 2002. The dispute is said to have resulted in a jury verdict of more than $5 million. "Despite having previously been sued for failing and refusing to accurately report and properly account to Plaintiff royalties owed on Plaintiff's Masters, Defendants have deliberately and knowingly continued to fail and refuse to pay the proper amounts due to Plaintiff," says the latest complaint. Specifically, Sony is alleged to have used a variety of fraudulent devices to understate what is owed, including failing to calculate proper royalties by deducting "packaging costs" and charging "blanket license fees" on Internet music sales, charging a "license fee" on foreign sales, taking deductions on excise taxes, giving away excessive amounts of purported "free goods" to dealers and distributors, applying incorrect royalty rates on foreign sales, etc. Popovich's estate believes the understatement has cost them in excess of $3 million, but isn't sure due to an alleged refusal to allow an audit. The plaintiff wants an accounting and damages but goes much further in alleging breaches of fiduciary duty and the contract. So now, Popovich's estate maintains that all rights in and to the master recordings have reverted to them. A declaratory judgement and a permanent injunction requiring delivery of all master recordings and the prohibition of future distribution is being requested. The albums at issue include Meat Loaf's "Bat Out of Hell," "Dead Ringer," "Midnight Lost and Found," and "Hits Out of Hell." Sony Music declined comment. OSCAR: Academys New Campaigning Rules
Beverly Hills, CA The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today issued regulations for how movies and achievements eligible for the 84th Academy Awards may be marketed to Academy members. The most notable change affects screening events that include filmmaker participation. Additional changes address digital delivery of movies to Academy members and public references to competing films or achievements via social media platforms. “These campaign regulations play an important role in protecting the integrity of the Academy Awards process and the distinction of the Oscar,” said Academy President Tom Sherak. “Above all, we want Academy members to see movies as they were meant to be seen, in a theatrical setting.” Prior to the nominations announcement (January 24, 2012), there are no restrictions on screening events to which Academy members may be invited. These events may include the live participation of individuals involved with the film (Q&A panel discussions, etc.) as well as receptions with food and beverage. After the nominations have been announced, Academy members may continue be invited to screenings that have filmmaker participation elements but receptions are not permitted. While there is no restriction on the total number of screenings of a particular movie, no one individual from the film can participate in more than two panel discussions. Previously, Academy members could not be invited to any screening event that included live participation of the filmmaker(s) or a reception either before or after the nominations had been announced. Additionally, after nominations are announced and until final polls close, members may not be invited to or attend any non-screening event that promotes or honors a nominated movie or individual nominee. Nominees themselves are also prohibited from attending such events. Academy-sanctioned events and awards ceremonies presented by the various guilds, critics groups and other organizations are exempt. The regulations now emphasize that viewing motion pictures in a theatrical setting is highly preferred over any other viewing method. The distribution of screeners is still permitted, however, with specific restrictions on packaging and accompanying materials. The digital distribution of movies to Academy members is now acceptable, as long as the delivery method conforms to the regulations. The long-standing ban on negative campaigning about other nominated films or individuals is now extended to social media platforms, and specific penalties are spelled out. Academy members will be subject to a one-year suspension for first-time violations and expulsion for any subsequent violations. As in the past, any form of advertising that includes quotes or comments negative or positive by Academy members is prohibited. To read the complete Regulations Concerning the Promotion of Films Eligible for the 84th Academy Awards, go to: http://www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/rules/regulations.html. Changing public perceptions by living an open life
Harris plays it straight on CBS sitcom 'How I Met Your Mother.' The skein begins its seventh season this month.Harris, left, and partner David Burtka arrive at the Outfest opening night gala of 'Gun Hill Road' in July. When Neil Patrick Harris decided to come out to the world in 2006 and reveal that he is gay, and in a long-term relationship with fellow actor David Burtka, many wondered what effect it would have on his career -- and on the way people perceive him both among the public and within the industry. As his manager Booh Schut tells it, the revelation was the best thing Harris has ever done."His coming out publicly really expanded him in all ways, because he then allowed himself to be, and came to the realization of, really who he was," she says. The act was also instrumental in getting Time magazine to put Harris on the 2010 edition of its annual Time 100 issue, which names "the people who most affect our world." "The public's perception of gay men is shifting because of this guy, and they'll be too entertained to notice," wrote Joss Whedon, who penned the entry on Harris. As a young person, Harris hadn't yet fully realized who he was, adds Schut, so when he came out "it freed him in so many ways. It has really caused an extraordinary growth in his personal life and his public life and his professional life. It was just a great thing. A hard thing to do and a great thing to do."The popular actor didn't seem to lose a single fan in the process, and has continued to play the straight, womanizing character of Barney Stinson on "How I Met Your Mother," a role he began in 2005. And he's been thriving ever since, booking vocal work in hit films like "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" and live-action gigs as well, most recently in "Beastly" and "The Smurfs," and hosting both the Tony and Emmy awards."I think the world has changed and everybody has realized that is it a real 'who cares?' It's a real non-issue," declares Pamela Fryman, the exec producer of "Mother." "I mean, who is a more positive role model than Neil Patrick Harris? He's always been who he is. He lives this great life, he's incredibly generous and thoughtful and hardworking. He's got a spectacular family, he is just a spectacular man in every area of his life."And his first boss concurs."I think it was important for Neil, because it is him, and it is his life. And nobody is happy when they are living a secret or a bifurcated life," says producer Steven Bochco. "And so at the point at which Neil finally made it a life choice, which was to be a fully integrated man, he did what he needed to do and I think that took real courage and a very strong sense of self, which he has."Bochco adds that being gay and coming out "is rapidly becoming a non-issue. You can see it in this whole evolution of gay marriage and in the context of how the public response to that concept has changed, and over a relatively very short period of time. The world is changing, as it should. And Neil's a part of that. The great antidote to bigotry is loss of fear. For when you love these characters, and by extension the actors who play them, you lose your fear of them."Harris himself agrees, too."I think hearing the news doesn't rattle people nearly as much as it used to; most people know someone these days who is gay or lesbian. It's people's private business, frankly. But I think because I grew up in front of cameras, on a show like 'Doogie Howser, M.D.,' people have a familiarity with me in a positive way," he says. "I've managed to live my life as openly and honestly as I am choosing to, and have people be rather indifferent about it, which I think is probably the greatest view that people could have."Related Links: Man with the magic touch Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com Transformers 3 Dark Of The Moon Full Movie
